  • So I’m back from my trip to Boston and I’m exhausted but it was so worth it.  I love how the city has so much history…more than any other US city I’ve been to previously.  And of course, I got to see my wonderful bf…we were kissing and holding hands like a new teenage couple…I guess distance does make the heart grow fonder.

Of course the trip didn’t start out very smoothly.  Due to a series of unfortunate events, I missed my flight on Friday afternoon…let’s just say Murphy’s Law was in full effect.  So I didn’t actually arrive in Boston until Saturday morning.  I got a one day visitor’s pass for $7.50 for unlimited rides on the subway (referred to by Bostonians as the T).  We made a pit stop at the Black Rose before taking a stroll through the narrow streets of Beacon Hill to admire the elegant brick and brownstone architecture.  Then we took a ride on the pedal powered Swan Boats in the lagoon of the Public Garden.  There were lots of street performers and touristy vendors at Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market which was our next stop.  We decided to have lunch here at Durgin Park which is famous for their surly waitresses but we were a little disappointed when she turned out to be fairly nice.  I had the fish cakes and the signature Boston baked beans which were pretty good.

Afterwards, we joined a free hour and a half tour of the Freedom Trail conducted by the National Parks Service.  The 3 mile Freedom Trail is a line of red paint or red brick on the sidewalk that links 16 historic sights, many of them associated with the Revolution and the early days of the United States.   At the Old South Meeting House we learned how Samuel Adams gave the signal to start the Boston Tea Party.  Then we went to the Old State House where the Boston Massacre (only 5 people were killed) happened just outside.  A few blocks away was Haymarket where fresh fruits and vegetables are sold.  From there we walked through the North End, kind of like a little Italy where we stopped to see Paul Revere's House and the Old North Church where the one if by land, two if by sea lanterns were hung.  Along the way we bought a chocolate chip cannoli from Mike's Pastry, one of the famous Hanover Street cafes.

The next destination was the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown.  This is the famous site where the order, "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes" was given.  Here we climbed up 297 steps to the top to get a great view of the city.  Afterwards we headed over to the U.S.S. Constitution, better known as Old Ironsides.  We played around inside the museum where we got to "fire" a cannon, sleep in the hammocks, and play with the sails.  Then we took the ferry from the Charleston Navy Yard to Long Wharf where we got a nice look at Boston Harbor.  Decided to grab a few beers at the Green Dragon Tavern before heading to dinner at Ye Olde Union Oyster House, America's oldest restaurant.  We ordered the Cold Seafood Sampler for appetizers (the oysters were so good!) with the broiled fresh boston scrod (a New England tradition) and the seafood medley for entrees.

I was pretty tired by this time because I didn't get much sleep on the red eye flight so we went to get drinks (Irish Coffee) at the Top of the Hub, a very trendy restaurant on the 52nd floor of the Prudential Center.  I felt a little under dressed but the view at night was totally worth it.

The next day we got up a little later than expected.  I wanted to stop by Fenway Park and check out the area.  Unfortunately, since it's a small stadium, tickets are pretty expensive and hard to come by.  There seemed to be a lot of cool pubs nearby though so it's definitely an area I want to check out the next time I come to Boston.  I wanted to do some window shopping so we went to Newbury Street in the Back Bay area.  Since it was hot we got some homemade ice cream at J.P. Licks.  Walked around Copley Plaza for a little bit.  Afterwards we made our way over to Boston Common, the oldest public park in America.  From there you can see the State House with the dome covered in gold leaf.  Nearby is the Granary Burying Grounds where John Adams, John Hancock, and Paul Revere are buried and Park Street Church.

Next, we went to visit Harvard Square in Cambridge.  I love the campus...makes me wish I had applied to some of the Ivy Leagues.   Took a picture with the statue of John Harvard in Old Yard and sat on the steps of Widener Library in Harvard Yard.  For $2 you can play chess with the Chessmaster and if you win, you get your money back.   We had lunch at Penang, a Malaysian restaurant nearby.  The food here was so good!  Also made a quick stop at MIT before heading over to the Cambridgeside Galleria, a mall.  Got a refreshing strawberry smoothie before embarking on our hour long Charles River Boat Tour.  There were amazing views and so many sailboats out.

Overall, I had an amazing time in Boston.  The weather was really nice and warm.  This would definitely be a city I would consider living in.

  • Happy hour at World Cafe Thursday night...their free mini pizzas are sooo good!  It's fun sitting in their outdoor patio and just people watching.  Afterwards we went to Urth Caffe for some organic coffee and hot cocoa.  I was surprised they even had boba here, haha.

And then Friday....BOSTON!  Yay I'm so excited!

  • Tuesday:  went to the BPM party at Mood...nice venue with Balinese decor but the music wasn't that great

Wednesday:  happy hour at the Arsenal in Santa Monica...their cream cheese stuffed jalapenos are soooo good!  They have a nice outdoor patio.

Thursday:  happy hour at McCormick and Schmicks in Pasadena...really good $2 appetizers.  Afterwards we went to Jake's Billiards to shoot some pool and sing karaoke.  Our last brief stop was at McMurphy's Tavern

Friday: going to the OC Fair...giant western sausage, funnel cake, deep fried snickers...oh my gosh I think I gained too much weight, haha.  They had a wine tasting bar where you could try gold medal winners for $1 each...played a lot of games just to win a little stuffed dog

Saturday:  picnic and concert at the Hollywood Bowl...again too much good food and wine, nice fireworks

Sunday:  brunch at the Bungalow Club...you can show up in your pajamas and get free mimosas...their omelettes are really yummy too

  • Catalina Day Trip

On the Catalina Express...we upgraded to the Commadore's lounge...not really worth it but you do get a free drink and a snack and they board you faster.

The 3.5 mile bike ride up to the Botanical Gardens...going up sucked but downhill was really fun!  It was only $10 to rent a bike for the whole day.

We had a lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs at Coney Island West.  Then we rented a kayak for 2 hours.  It was fun watching people flip over, racing, and splashing each other, haha.  For dinner, we enjoyed great food and badinage (Word of the day meaning light, playful talk; banter) at Armstrong's Seafood Restaurant...really good shrimp cocktail and calamari.

Sunday we went for dim sum at Empress Pavilion in Chinatown.  This is now my new favorite dim sum place...their cha siu bao is so soft and yummy.  You can even order boba from the carts   And it was cheap too...I was full and it was only $9 with tip!

After that, went to go meet up with another friend at Cabana Club, which used to be the Sunset Room but now has a newly remodeled patio boasting private VIP cabanas and 2 small waterfalls.  It was so hot that it was nice to cool your feet in the mini pool.

    Free sushi lunch today...yay!

  • Went to Here Thursday night hoping to catch some hot girl on girl action.  Instead most of the lesbians there are really butch.  At least the hot shirtless Polish bartender Thomas at Rage still remembered us

A new flat screen monitor...a free lunch...unlimited free supply of soda...these are the things that I look forward to at work.  Isn't that sad?  I'm not extremely excited about what I do...I don't contribute to the betterment of the world in any appreciable way.  I can't seem to get rid of this pervasive feeling of ennui (this is my dictionary word of the day...I got this from the movie Alfie and I decided that I'm going to try and use every new word in a sentence on all future entries)

  • EDIT:  Went to Basque in Hollywood last night...I couldn't resist the Hypnotiq open bar  This club used to be Deep and they still have the burlesque dancers behind the one way mirrors above the bar.  I was hoping to see Lance from N'Sync since he was there last week but I was disapointed.  Afterwards, we walked over to another bar, Daddy's Lounge...nice dim atmosphere with leather couches...great place to chill with some drinks and to hang out with your friends.

    The weekend:

Dinner at Mishima…really good cheap udon noodles

Clubbing at Forbidden City for Amy’s Birthday

17.5 mile hike to Mt. San Gorgonio via the Vivian Creek trail with 5,550 feet elevation gain at an altitude of 11,499 feet.  Total time: 10 hours.

    Movie reviews:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – I loved this book as a kid so of course I had to go see it…it was a lot better than I thought it was going to be…it’s a little weird but pretty entertaining. 3.5/5 stars

Fantastic Four – I was a big comic nerd back in the day and FF was one of my favorites…the guy who plays the Torch and Jessica Alba are HOT!…lots of good action. 4/5 stars

War of the Worlds – although there is a lot of big budget special effects in the movie…I thought the storyline was a little weak…Tom Cruise is starting to show his age…3/5 stars*

Wedding Crashers – I was expecting this to be funnier than it was…seemed like a lot of the good scenes were in the trailers already…Vince Vaughn kind of stole the show at the end…the weddings in the movie were beautiful though…gave me some good ideas, haha.  3/5 stars*

*ratings adjusted per rips31 to reflect my unfairly higher expectations

  • Sport # 49587023 that I suck at:  Bowling

Went to Bowling Square in Arcadia...they have a special on Tuesday nights where it's $5/person and only $0.50/game and $0.50 for shoe rental.  Got there late so only played 2 games...I got an 88 and 93.  At least I wasn't the worst one there, but close.  Maybe that's why I keep trying out new sports in the hopes that I'll finally find something I'm good at  Afterwards we went to Life Plaza for some boba.

Going to a free outdoor concert at the Santa Monica Pier tonight.  Wine, music, and the stars...should be nice.

    Some belated movie reviews:

The Man:  saw a free screening of this at the Block...Samuel L. Jackson is surprisingly funny in this but there were a lot of moments that dragged.  I'd say save it for a rental. 2.5/5 stars.

Hitch:  i loved this movie...Will Smith is so cute!  My favorite line, "Life is not the amount of breaths you take, it's the moments that take your breath away" *sigh* 4.5/5 stars.

Saw:  the plot is kind of interesting and makes you think...movie jumps around a lot and the end leaves you hanging. 3/5 stars.

  • EDIT:  I'm going to Boston in a few weeks.  Anyone have any suggestions for things to do, places to eat, etc?

Did so much dancing this weekend I actually feel sore...or does that just mean I'm out of shape, haha?

Went to the Vanguard on Friday night.  If I had known before that it was going to be an 18+ club, I probably would not have gone.  But the music was really good so it totally made up for that.  They have a large patio with a giant Buddha which was pretty cool.  Got home around 5am.

The next night we went to the Factory in West Hollywood.  I got a great buzz going.  It's funny because they turn the kitchen into an infirmary where all the really drunk people go to recover.  How do I know?  Because that's where we found one of my friends   Thanks to Chris (one of the EMTs) for taking care of her.  Thanks also to the hot bartender who hooked it up with some free shots.  Afterwards we went to Ihop for some late night food and to sober up.  We had a bit of an adventure though because by the time we got back from Ihop, the valet where one of my friends had parked her car was closed.  The valet also had her house keys and another friend's car keys in there plus we couldn't even find her car in the lot.  We got back to my place around 6am where they slept for a few hours and we went back in the morning to try and get her car when the valet opened again.  Luckily her car was there and everything worked out.  We ended up having breakfast at the same Ihop where we were just hours before, haha.

I'm going to start bringing my camera when I go out now so I will have more interesting pics to post in the future.

  • Usually I don't like to do anything by myself.  I've never watched a movie, ate at a restaurant, or gone clubbing by myself before.  But it was nice to take the day off yesterday and go on my own to check out MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) in downtown LA.  Its free admission on Thursday afternoons.  I'm more of a fan of classical art than modern stuff.  My reaction for most of the pieces were .  But some of the stuff was pretty interesting.

Afterwards, I met up with a friend for drinks at Vine Street Lounge.  Walked over to the Pig 'n Whistle for a bit before we wound up at Boardner's for a late night snack.

TGIF...I know this was a short week but somehow it still felt long.

  • Friday:  grabbed some drinks at Red Buddha but it was more of a place to lounge than dance so we walked around Hollywood Blvd. before ending up at Ivar.

Saturday:  celebrated our 2 year anniversary by having dinner at Porterhouse Bistro.  Their prix fixe menu is a great deal...for $37.50/person you get 2 drinks (including alchoholic drinks), starter, choice of appetizer, soup, or salad, entree with side, and dessert.  We had the porterhouse steak of course and it was very good...so was the smoked salmon quesadilla and the chocolate lava cake.  I liked how they served desserts with a candle inside some cotton candy...haven't had cotton candy since I was a little kid.

Sunday:   enjoyed the open bar at Chi inside the Hyatt on Sunset.  Great atmosphere for drinks but the food was not really good.  We were supposed to go to a party in the penthouse afterwards but one of the elevators broke down and they ended up closing down the party so we spent the rest of the night at the restaurant.

Monday:  was supposed to go to a couple of BBQ's but ended up being lazy and just stayed in and cleaned the house since my mom is coming back from Vietnam today.  Yay...finally some home cooked food...I was starting to gain some weight from eating out for 2 1/2 weeks straight
